STRANGER SUGGESTS

SATURDAY 1/27

NO. 13 BABY

(MUSIC) I am embarrassed about how much I love this band. Punk, if anything, should be new, right? The past is exhausted; the codependent recycling of our familiars proves us old and dull. Still, the pathways are worn so deeply into some of our brains. Watching No. 13 Baby play Pixies covers at the Croc, the muscles in my thighs trembled. It's like the sockeye coming home to spawn, and spawn they will. There is not a more ideal setting than an old, hipsterfied fisherman's tavern in the sleepy west of Ballard for this valley full of pioneers to hold their sacred blood rites in. "Cease to resist, giving my goodbye/Drive my car into the ocean." GRANT COGSWELL

Sunset Tavern, 5433 Ballard Ave NW, 784-4880, 9 pm, $6.

UP & COMING: this week's music picks

NO. 13 BABY, NO. 2, RUSTON MIRE

(Berbati's) Possibly one of the most widely lamented band breakups of the twentieth century was that of the Pixies. For one perfect moment in history, they were the fascinating promise of what "alternative" music could be, and was for awhile, until it became the intolerable sludge that I presume it still is since I stopped listening to it, years ago. Even though both Frank Black and Kim Deal went off in some interesting directions, the mourning continues and the wounds have not healed. Like a Morningstar not-dog, No. 13 Baby has the same shape and texture, and leaves a similar taste in your mouth. There's no substitute for the meat, but you might find yourself craving the imposter for its own special flavor. MARJORIE SKINNER

No. 13 Baby - "I got a broken face, uh-huh, uh-huh!" Nothing is more splendid than sharing the belief with others that the Pixies truly mattered. Truth be known, if there is a God, much of the decisions regarding who gets into Heaven will surround whether or not you own "Surfer Rosa" in your record collection. Of course, exceptions will be made for attending enough No.13 Baby shows 'cause their perfect presentation of every hit Pixies' song is just about damn holy! (IAJ)

Band: No. 13 Baby Date: Oct 22, 99 Rating: 4
Comments: I never thought I'd enjoy a Pixies "tribute" band so I was skeptical about #13 Baby when I heard about them. Needless to say I (who had never been much of a Pixies fan) was pleasantly surprised to find myself very entertained by their set and knowing most of the songs. This made me realize I'd been missing out, and I've started buying Pixies CDs.

I never saw the original Pixies, but I'm told the members of #13 Baby (mostly members of other Seattle bands, including Mike Musberger on drums) do a decent job of representing them. Most of what I've seen them play has been from Doolittle, but there is some variety too: "Gigantic" from Surfer Rosa has wormed its way into my consciousness, and I actually like bassist "Kim's" rendition more than the original.

UP & COMING: this week's music picks

NO. 13 BABY, THE DRAGONS, SHUGGIE

(Crocodile) "She gotta tattooed tit, say number 13." The Pixies were one of the best bands ever and people should cover their songs, dammit. And hey, No. 13 Baby do it well, so what's there to complain about? In a lake that's like an ocean. With a pet at my side. From a distant star to this here bar. Gigantic. Your Irish skin looks Mexican. The Dragons are a San Diego straight-up rock band. They cover "Bad Reputation" and "Adios to Mexico," and are also known, according to one fan, to be expert pickpockets and masters of sleights of hand. JUAN-CARLOS RODRIGUEZ

NO. 13 BABY

(Crocodile) Anyone who ever suffered through a Pixies show can attest to the fact that they -- how can I say this? -- SUCKED live. Thank goodness for No. 13 Baby, a local Pixies tribute band who one-up the original by actually being fun to watch. While Black Francis and company looked like they'd rather be experiencing oral surgery (minus the anesthesia) than performing, No. 13 Baby are obviously having a blast. But this isn't just self-indulgence, folks: The songs are so well done that, apart from the fact that there's energy emanating from the stage, you'd almost be hard-pressed to say it wasn't the Pixies themselves at times. -- Barbara Mitchell

NO. 13 BABY, JASON TRACHTENBURG, IN COLOR

(Crocodile) For ladies and gentlemen of a certain age, No. 13 Baby (who play Pixies covers) could be nothing less than a potlatch for the end of youth. Back before I learned how hard it is to make a group of drunks do anything in unison, I planned to stage a full a cappella recital of Doolittle, with four instrumental conductors in headphones listening to the record and an open bullhorn for the vocals. Now everyone who would have cooperated is busy with the new baby. This will have to do. GRANT COGSWELL
